HUNTINGTON HARBOUR -A 10-year old girl whose hair became caught in the
filter of a backyard whirlpool tub Sunday was freed from under the water and
revived by a family friend as a police officer who saw the rescue effort
from a parolling helicopter raced to her aid, police said today.
Katie Glavinic was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital for observation but
was expected to recover, police said. The girl became caught at about
7:30 p.m. in the whirlpool tub at her family's home in the 3600 block of
Seascape Drive. The girl's brother yelled for help, and police were called.
The first police unit to respond was a Huntington Beach police helicopter.
Pilot Sgt. Tom Arnold saw from overhead that the girl was still underwater,
and he set the helicopter down on the residential street. His observer,
officer Rick McNaughton, ran to the child. Family friend Phil Burtis
by that time had pulled Katie out of the tub. She was not breathing, and he
administered CPR until she was revived, police said. Paramedics took her to
the hospital.
